As Michael Novak knows only too well, interior trends don’t tend to fit neatly into yearly seasons: “Trends are never confined to calendar years—they evolve, adapt, and flow seamlessly across seasons. That’s why understanding the difference between fleeting fads and enduring trends is so important.”
We spoke to the interior expert recently about trends in interiors and furniture. Read on to see what’s popular right now.
Novak & Parkes had a very busy 2024, designing sleek modern spaces, luxurious bedrooms and spa-like bathrooms. “It’s been so exciting to see the industry embrace a fresh wave of trends that prioritise warmth, individuality and personality.”
Although warm neutrals were still popular, muted shades of mossy greens, russet red and deep ochres were in demand at the end of the year. “One of the most refreshing shifts we noticed was the move away from the “insta-house” aesthetic that has oversaturated social media. Instead, clients began seeking spaces that reflect their individuality and tell their own stories.”
Michael thinks that colour will become more important in 2025. “From moody blues to earthy ochres and sumptuous aubergines, colour is making its way back into our homes, bringing depth, drama, and a sense of vibrancy. This evolution is paired with a sustained love for darker wood tones, which add richness and grounding to any space.”
He also thinks the minimalist trend will fade away, making way for texture and personality. This ties in nicely with his prediction for furniture: “The modern farmhouse trend, which has dominated in recent years, is now branching out in two distinct directions: modern organic and heritage.
“Modern organic embraces soft curves, flowing lines, and a focus on natural imperfections. Materials like travertine, alabaster, walnut, and burl are taking centre stage, bringing a tactile, earthy quality to furniture. It’s all about creating spaces that feel grounded, serene, and connected to nature.
“Heritage, on the other hand, is about mixing antique or vintage pieces with contemporary designs. It’s not about recreating Victoriana but rather incorporating one or two beautifully crafted, high-quality pieces that add depth and character to a room. It’s a nod to timeless craftsmanship and an appreciation for investing in pieces that will last.”
And he leaves us with a little bit of advice: “Always prioritise quality when buying furniture. Examine the materials, hardware and construction. Fast interiors, like fast fashion, are on their way out - it’s all about sustainability and longevity.”
With 2025 already shaping up to be a jam-packed year for Novak & Parkes, as they embark on several residential projects and some new-build designs, Michael certainly knows what he’s talking about.
