There are few things more pleasurable than a leisurely Sunday lunch, particularly when the city is bathed in sunshine and there is every excuse to slow down, settle in and enjoy an afternoon of good food and wonderful company.

On a beautiful sunny Sunday in Birmingham, we made our way to San Carlo for a relaxed and indulgent afternoon that combined the comforting familiarity of a traditional roast with the glamour and hospitality for which the restaurant is known.
Inside, San Carlo offered its iconic framed celebrity picture elegance, providing a glamorous setting in which to escape the bustle of the city and settle in for a leisurely lunch.
We started with delicious focaccia, served with sea salt, olive oil and balsamic vinegar, alongside generous sprigs of fragrant rosemary. Warm, crisp and wonderfully moreish, it was the perfect accompaniment to our drinks and an indulgent way to start the afternoon. A perfectly paired glass of Merlot added to the sense of occasion, encouraging us to sit back, relax and take our time.
For the main event, we opted for two of the classic roast choices, with one of us enjoying the beef and the other the chicken. Both were beautifully prepared and generously served, accompanied by crisp, golden roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables, rich homemade gravy and a traditional Yorkshire pudding. We also added a side of cauliflower cheese, which was every bit as indulgent as a Sunday lunch demands.
Each element worked beautifully together, delivering all the comforting qualities of a traditional British roast while retaining the polished presentation and refined atmosphere of San Carlo. Side note - if you're anything like us and consider yourselves gravy enthusiasts, we'd definitely recommend asking for extra.
No Sunday lunch would be complete without dessert, so we decided to indulge a little further with two classics: a traditional tiramisu and a crème brûlée. The tiramisu was rich and indulgent, while the crème brûlée was beautifully creamy with that satisfying caramelised top. Both were a fitting finale and a very good excuse to linger a little longer.
What really elevated the experience, however, was the service. It was excellent throughout, warm, professional and attentive without ever becoming intrusive. We were made to feel completely at ease, with everything taken care of while still being given the space to relax, talk and enjoy our lunch at our own pace. That balance of attentiveness and discretion added to the overall experience.
With sunshine outside, a good glass of Merlot, a generous roast, indulgent desserts and San Carlo's distinctive surroundings, it was exactly the sort of Sunday afternoon that encourages you to slow down and savour the moment.
San Carlo has given the traditional Sunday roast its own distinctive touch, combining classic British comfort with an elegant city-centre setting and Italian hospitality.
For anyone looking to make their Sunday lunch feel a little more special, San Carlo Birmingham is certainly worth a visit. We thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon and will definitely be back.
